As a Materials Scientist – Glass Science, you will conduct research relating to the processing and properties of glasses and glass-ceramic materials. These include (but are not limited to): compositional development, forming, thermal treatment, and physical characterization (optical, electrical, mechanical, corrosion, etc); glasses for joining and packaging of other functional materials. One key aspect of this position will be to understand the composition-structure-processing-properties relationships of inorganic glasses, in particular glass compositions tailored for optical, solar and electronic packaging applications.
You will conduct basic and applied research on composition, processing, forming, characterization, and degradation of glasses and glass-ceramic materials. This work includes, but is not limited to: composition development; processing of raw materials to make samples; physical characterization & analysis.
You will:
- Conduct basic and applied research in developing inorganic (silicate and non-silicate) glasses and glass-ceramics, including the development of new compositions and synthesis procedures.
- Determine fundamental performance and potential limitations for new and existing glasses and glass-ceramics.
- Develop research objectives and action plans to address these opportunities.
- Work with broader material and system teams and other senior scientists to develop innovative material solutions.
- Invent and patent when appropriate. Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Global Research, GE businesses, government agencies, and professional societies
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic and Glass Science and Engineering, Solid-State and/or Inorganic Chemistry or Metallurgy
- Knowledge of glass processing, properties and characterization.
- Understanding of solid-state chemistry and its effects on the physical and/or optical properties of inorganic materials.
- Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications.
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
- Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.
- Must be 18 years or older.
